ABLETT, NOAH
(1883 - 1935), miner and Trade Union leader
Born at Porth, Rhondda, 4 October 1883, son of John and
Jane
Ablett. As a miner, he went for a period to the Central Labour College; he then became a checkweigher at Maerdy. He was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the South Wales Miners' Federation in January 1911, and subsequently a member of the executive of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain. In 1918 he was appointed a
ABRAHAM, WILLIAM
(Mabon; 1842 - 1922), M.P. and first president of the South Wales Miners' Federation
attracted enormous crowds. He would often sing to the audiences, as he was endowed with a good tenor voice. In 1860 he married Sarah, daughter of David
Williams
; she died in 1900, having borne him three sons and three daughters. Mabon was made a Privy Councillor in 1911. He died at Pentre, Rhondda, 14 May 1922.
ALBAN DAVIES, DAVID
(1873 - 1951), business man and philanthropist

of Brynglas, Moria, Penuwch, in Holy Trinity Church, Aberystwyth; they had 4 sons and a daughter. Davies and his wife went to London to work with Rachel's brother Evan who had a successful dairy business. Born 24 June 1901, in Walthamstow, London, the eldest son of David Alban Davies and Rachel (née
Williams
) his wife, both of Cardiganshire. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, and gained a scholarship to St. John's College, Oxford, but could not afford to go there. He went to Cornell University, U.S.A., for two years to study agriculture and dairying and worked for a short while in

Born 11 January 1882, at ? Abergavenny, Monmouth, son of David Alban and his wife Hannah. The mother died at Abergavenny, 28 September 1884. The father was a journeyman tailor and he died at Hereford, 2 January 1891. Consequently, the family was scattered. Two elder sons became shoemakers near Fleetwood. Born 27 June 1875 in Chester, son of John Anwyl, lay preacher, of the Anwyl family of Caerwys, Flintshire, and his wife Ellen (née

), whose family came from Llangwnnadl, Caernarfonshire. He entered the ministry and became minister of Elim (Congl.), Carmarthen in 1899. Owing to deafness he relinquished his church to take charge of the Deaf and Dumb Institute at Pontypridd, 1904-19. In 1914

AUBREY, THOMAS
(1808 - 1867), Welsh Wesleyan Methodist minister
district meeting. On 6 April 1831 he married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert and Gwen
Williams
of Ruthin. He died at Rhyl on 16 November 1867. Thomas Aubrey is one of the outstanding figures in Welsh Wesleyan Methodist history. He was first and foremost an eloquent and successful preacher, but he was hardly less successful as an administrator, despite the slight interest he had taken in circuit
